Large kitchens are always a desirable choice in any home, but not all of us are lucky enough to have all the space we want. Small kitchens are common, and there’s no reason why they can’t be a wonderful, functional space in the house. With that in mind, we’ve picked a few of our top kitchen ideas for small spaces.
It might seem obvious, but it’s really important that you try to use all of the available space in the room. At first glance, you might think that you’ve used the space wisely, but actually that might not be the case. Corners for example can often hide cupboard space that isn’t particularly accessible. We’d always recommend considering fold-out corner racks or doors that mean you can make use of all the space you have.
Leading on from this, considering height will really ensure that you’re making the most of things. If you think about the lower level cupboards for example, are you making use of their full height with interior shelves? Or could you fit additional shelves to get more storage space? If you’re remodelling your kitchen, then consider large drawers where possible, as these are often a better use of space than cupboards.
Worktop space is a priority for any good cook, because it means more preparation space when preparing meals. There are a few different things that affect how much space you’ll have, but one of them is of course the cooker. A large cooker is great for entertaining guests or preparing food for a large family, but if you’re the only one in your apartment, then consider a compact 60cm range cooker, which will still provide two large ovens and a large hob. Bear in mind however that a 90cm range cooker is only 30cm wider than a standard one - making it a possibility even in small spaces.
Light is really important for making a smaller space feel larger and more open. If you’re working with a small kitchen, then really try to encourage as much light in as possible. Blinds that let in plenty of light are a good option, and mirrors are helpful too. Not only do they give the illusion of a larger space, but the reflection helps to cast light throughout the room.
Decor for small kitchens means being minimal. Clutter is the enemy of smaller spaces, as it helps to reduce the number of flat surfaces available, creating a more cramped feel. When designing the decor of your small kitchen, you should avoid excessive decorations and any clutter on worksurfaces. The more open, flat spaces such as walls and worktops that you can create, the more open the space will feel. Colour can be vibrant, but lighter shades and white always work best for opening up a small kitchen.
